Organize to Travel
Many of us may be out of practice packing a suitcase and traveling. I was just on the phone with a client who is traveling in May and it’s the first business trip she has been on in two years! I’m currently packing to fly to see family and couldn’t help but feel a little out of practice with traveling myself. What better time to brush up on packing skills and share some of my favorite tips?
The Right Ratio
Stylists recommend that every woman’s closet should be built around the ratio of 25% bottoms to 75% tops. This ratio works great for packing, too. Basic bottoms like slacks and skirts can look completely different depending on the top and accessories.
Pick a Color
Build the entire trip wardrobe around one base color, for example, choose black, navy, or khaki as a base color. This reduces the number of coordinating items that will need to be packed like shoes and belts. A complimentary color scheme will also increase the number of looks that can be achieved from a few basic pieces. Add pops of color with accessories or tops.
Layer for Flexibility
Instead of taking one bulky coat, bring several layers which give you options for dressing at your destination. A lighter jacket/trench over a hoodie/sweater will keep you warm and give you more options for dressing at your destination. Always pack a light sweater or fleece, even for summer travel. It will come in handy on the freezing plane and after the sun goes down.
Reduce to the Bare Minimum
Downsize toiletries to the smallest size possible. A contact lens case can be used to store foundation and moisturizer. They are leak proof and hold about a teaspoon of product, perfect for a short trip. Ask for travel sizes of favorite products at the makeup counter or salon. Refill travel size bottles when unpacking so there will be one less thing to do when packing for the next trip.
Don’t forget the Important Stuff
Make a list of the things that couldn’t easily be replaced at the destination - prescription glasses, medical devices and medication - and make sure you pack those items in your carry on bag when flying. Keep important information saved digitally. I love the travel app Tripit and use it to organize flight, hotel, and rental car info as well as important travel documents. One of my favorite features is the app’s walking directions that will guide me from gate to gate at any airport.
One final thought is to keep your packing list on your phone so you can update your list real time. It’s always good to capture those thoughts of what you wished you had packed (or not packed) while those thoughts are top of mind. Here is wishing you all safe and happy travels as we transition into spring and summer.
